In the years 2020-21, the artist-architects Ciel Grommen and Maximiliaan Royakkers developed an in situ study based on the question: how can we develop an architecture that inhabits space, instead of simply occupying it?
With the help of local experts and enthusiasts, the artists produced a unique re-edition of the 'Winterslagse Duivels' - the bricks that were once made entirely from the waste materials of the Winterslag mine.

The city of Genk has a rich history which took a decisive turn with the discovery of a coal seam in its subsoil. It took a new step when the coal mines closed down one after the other. It is therefore no coincidence that a melting pot of creativity was born on a site so steeped in history.
